Sunset Barnyard

Hurst Majors, a Manhattan mayor and park director back in the day, wanted the Sunset Zoo to have a children’s area. In 1968, a K-State architecture student designed the children’s zoo and construction was completed in 1974. Unfortunately, the children’s zoo eventually closed.

The Sunset Zoo Trust wants to bring back one of the most popular attractions of Sunset Zoo. It will feature a rustic barn, corral and pens for a variety of farmyard animals and will showcase agriculture, the largest industry in Kansas.
