History of the Trust

The idea of forming a Sunset Zoological Park and Wildlife Conservation Trust began in 1990 with Don Wixom, then director of Sunset Zoo, who suggested the formation of a foundation for the purpose of charitable giving to Sunset Zoo.

The founding members of the Trust were Richard and Jane Thiessen, Dr. David and Kimberly Sager, Steve and Migette Kaup, Mimi Balderson and Jon and Kathy Murdock. Jon Murdock was the founding president.  The founders are honored with plaques on a Memorial Wall at the zoo just after the entrance and down the steps.
