Sunset Zoo Trust Welcomes Dr. Kaleigh Reyes as New Zoo Director

The Sunset Zoo Trust is pleased to welcome Dr. Kaleigh Reyes as the new Director of Sunset Zoo. The Trust is working closely with Dr. Reyes as she leads the Zoo builds upon its strong history of animal care, conservation, education, and community engagement.

Dr. Reyes joined Sunset Zoo in early 2026 from Bangor, Maine, where she served as a professor of animal behavior at Husson University. She previously served as a gorilla scientist at Basel Zoo in Switzerland. She earned her Ph.D. in biological anthropology from the University of Toronto in 2025, specializing in primatology with an emphasis on great ape cognition, welfare, and behavior. She also has a deep passion for ornithological science and welfare.

Throughout her twelve-year career in primatology, Dr. Reyes has conducted ethical, scientific research on primates and parrots in human care at zoos throughout North America and Europe, as well as with nonprofit ape conservation organizations. Her field research includes work with wild chimpanzees and parrots in Senegal and Uganda. 

Dr. Reyes is committed to continuing her work in animal welfare at Sunset Zoo while strengthening opportunities for research, education, and collaboration. She looks forward to developing partnerships with Kansas State University and working with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders to create meaningful connections that benefit both Sunset Zoo and the Manhattan community.

The Sunset Zoo Trust looks forward to partnering with Dr. Reyes, the Zoo staff, volunteers, supporters, and community partners as Sunset Zoo begins this exciting new chapter of expansion.
