The Sunset Zoo Trust praises longtime zoo director Scott Shoemaker at his retirement.
Trust President Linda Wassberg issued the following statement:
“We are very grateful for Scott’s leadership of Sunset Zoo over nearly 30 years.
There have been numerous significant improvements to the Zoo during that time, but I believe that his legacy will be the continuing achievement of certification from the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The AZA has very rigorous standards for animal care, a commitment to conservation of endangered species and programming, and only 10 percent of zoos nationwide achieve this certification.
Sunset Zoo was first recognized in 1989 and Scott, after joining the Zoo in 1996, has led his staff in the preparation of a long list of items that are inspected every five years, enabling the Sunset Zoo to be AZA certified for 35 years. One of his last official acts was to be certain we would continue that accreditation through 2030!
This is a huge achievement for our small zoo and we are very grateful to Scott and wish him the very best in retirement!”
The Sunset Zoo Trust, founded in 1990, is an organization of people passionate about supporting the zoo both financially and with their time. The Trust has led fundraising for numerous zoo projects including the Exhibition Asia expansion in 2022.
